INTERIOR RENOVATION

Flexible living
Location: La Selva del Camp, Tarragona · 2017

Renovation of an apartment in a housing block from the early 1990s in La Selva del Camp.
The original layout was highly fragmented, composed of 3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, a living room, and a kitchen with a utility gallery, all arranged around a narrow, windowless corridor.
The aim of the project is to unify the spaces and bring in as much natural light as possible.

To allow light to reach the center of the apartment, one of the bedrooms was sacrificed and turned into a large hallway that separates the day and night areas, and which can also function as an extension of the living room and kitchen. This is made possible by a large sliding glass door that divides the apartment.

The day area consists of a living-dining-kitchen space lit by the balcony, which has been extended from the old utility gallery. The installations in the gallery are kept and hidden behind a built-in cabinet with four perforated metal sheet doors. One of the bathrooms was reduced in size to create a dedicated laundry space.

Part of the brief was to connect the apartment with the mezzanine. The access space was limited, and the solution was a metal samba staircase. This staircase is conceived as a light element that doesn’t act as a visual barrier and allows the passage of light from both the lower floor and the skylight above the mezzanine.
